Gay Grossman

Bio: Gay has been active in the Rare Disease community for over two decades and continues her efforts to build and support patient and family advocacy. She co-founded ADCY5.org, the foundation for ADCY5-related dyskinesia. ADCY5.org supports world-renowned researchers who study the gene and its variant. She continues to build a community of hundreds with this disease, when they started with only 1. She is an advocate of shared data and patients owning their data. Her focus remains to help all Rare Disease patients. Together with her daughter Lilly, she co-authored a children's Rare Disease book, We Are All Rare, providing a Rare Disease learning tool for elementary school aged children. Early in her career, Gays success at Glaxo Inc., provided her with an introduction to science that she now applies when sharing the burden of disease, to bring awareness through advocacy, and public speaking. Gay successfully advocates in a variety of environments including, but not limited to, educational classrooms, private, state, and federal insurance, as well as collaborating in the Rare Disease space to gain access to clinical trials and medical therapies. She is currently the Director of Patient Engagement at Neurogene Inc. and applies her learning to help other Rare Disease families.

Bio: Tim Ken Mackey is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Global Public Health at UC San Diego School of Medicine, the Director of Healthcare Research and Policy at UC San Diego - Extension, and the Director of the Global Health Policy Institute. His multidisciplinary work focuses on technology (including big data, machine learning and blockchain), health policy, global governance, and global public health.

Robert Matheis

Bio: Dr. Matheis has a long tenure within scientific and medical communications and has been an integral part of ISMPP for more than a decade. He joined ISMPP in July of 2019 from his role as the Executive Director and Head of Global Scientific Communications at Celgene Corporation. Previously, he was Senior Director of Evidence Based Medical Communications at Sanofi. Rob began his ISMPP journey as inaugural Chair of the ISMPP Credentialing Board of Trustees, with oversight of examination development and establishment of credentialing criteria. He also served as the 7th President of the ISMPP Board of Trustees. During his tenure, Rob was an influential champion for transitioning ISMPP governance to a permanent board-appointed President and CEO. Most recently, Rob has been Chair of the ISMPP Global Transparency and Trends Committee and a Workstream Lead for the ISMPP Authorship Selection Best Practices Task Force. His professional interests include establishing the value proposition for medical affairs and enriching the role of medical publication professionals to include medical communication capabilities. Dr. Matheis is a licensed clinical psychologist with specializations in behavioral statistics, neuropsychology, and organizational psychology. He is well-published with an extensive bibliography covering brain and spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and alternative medicine. Outside of work, Rob enjoys spending time with his family, staying active, and volunteering with various community organizations.

To bring attention to the finding that earlier treatment for MI improved outcomes for patients, his team developed a program that, when implemented, reduced treatment times for suspected heart attack victims, which improved patient outcomes. Another physician-based program that immediately improved patient outcomes addressed a rare disease, infantile spasms or West syndrome, and was supported by Questcor. Many pediatric neurologists were treating the symptoms of this cognitively detrimental disease, but they were not completing a second test to insure that the resulting hypsarrhythmia was resolved in the infant. Michael¿s team developed a series of educational programs that increased awareness and action on the part of these physicians. Michael came to Virgo Health from MedVal, where as President, EVP, he led a writing and editorial team focused on publication planning and publications, as well as regulatory writing and medical affairs initiatives. Previously, he was CEO of Fission Communications, a New York-based medical education and communications company he founded in 2001, where he guided the development and execution of distinctive medical communications programs. He was also Director of Business Development at Ventiv Health Communications in Stamford, Connecticut, and has held positions at Genecom, LLC, and Q.E.D. International, Inc. Michael began his career in the research sector of the pharmaceutical industry as a project technician at OSI Pharmaceuticals, a drug discovery company based in New York. Her professional experience also includes nearly ten years as in-house editor at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Lukes Medical Center in Chicago, where she supported academic publication development in the departments of pathology, surgical nursing, internal medicine, and the Office of the Dean. For 3 years, Carol was Managing Medical Editor at Publications International, publishers of Consumer Guide, where she developed consumer-targeted books and magazines on topics including family health, fitness, exercise, diet and prescription drugs.
