Antonio Ciaglia

Bio: Dr. Antonio Ciaglia is Policy Manager at the International Alliance of Patients' Organizations (IAPO) where he leads policy development and research activities. Antonio holds a PhD in Political Science and has worked as a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and the University of Portsmouth. He specialises in policy research, health policy, patient information, and the role of civil society actors in policy making. Antonio represents IAPO in international, multi-stakeholder fora within which he collaborates with other patients' organizations, the WHO, regulators, HTA bodies and industry. In IMI-funded research projects, such as IMI-GetReal and IMI-PREFER, Antonio carries out primary and secondary research activities aimed at collecting and providing evidence-based patient perspectives around various aspects related to healthcare decision-making. Antonio's work has appeared on various academic journals with a focus on policy and political science.

Duncan Currie

Bio: Duncan is a medical writer with 22 years experience in large pharmaceutical companies (Pfizer and Lundbeck) and Contract Research Organisations (PRA, Quanticate, and PPD) with a track record of delivering a range of high quality documents within tight deadlines and budgets. He has an academic background with a PhD in Clinical Pharmacology and has conducted research on the effects of drugs of psychomotor function at Dundee and Surrey Universities. Duncan has been working freelance as a medical writer for 6 years and his company, Maze House Medical Ltd, provides predominantly regulatory medical writing services to the pharmaceutical industry. Duncan specialises in authoring and quality control of clinical study reports and serious adverse event narratives but also has experience in writing clinical study protocols, investigator brochures, and other regulatory documents. Duncan also has some medical communications experience having compiled advisory board minutes and also produced a variety of scientific publications over many years.

Beatrix Dorr

Bio: Beatrix originally trained as a veterinarian. She subsequently moved into clinical research where she held increasingly senior positions at leading institutions across Europe. Her focus was on the successful development of transcatheter heart valves. A love of medical writing, training and an interest in medical devices led Beatrix in 2011 to start her own consultancy. She can successfully navigate the new regulatory guidelines and offers real expertise across some of the more complex device areas. Since 2015, she is a member of EMWA's executive committee and recently became a member of the Medical Device Special Interest Group. In 2011 Beatrix established her own company, CORIUVAR consulting, which focuses on clinical research consulting and medical writing for medical devices. More recently, Beatrix was elected as an executive committee member of EMWA and took up the role of public relations officer. Among her many responsibilities, Beatrix and her team look after social media, promotion and advertisement, cross-functional relationships and the Internship Forum for new writers.

Bio: Paul Farrow is a Communications Director at Oxford PharmaGenesis, an independent HealthScience communications consultancy. With over 12 years of experience in medical communications, Paul has worked on the full range of activities in multiple therapy areas. He has expertise in strategic publication planning and leads the Publication Ethics, Planning and Research Group at Oxford PharmaGenesis. John then joined AstraZeneca in 2000 as a Global Publications Manager working in the neurology, pain, anaesthesia and psychiatry areas. He then moved into Global Professional Relations at AstraZeneca in the psychiatry field - a position he held for 3 years. From 2008 to 2016 John was in leadership roles in the Global Publications Group at AstraZeneca Medical Affairs at Alderley Park, UK. He was responsible for publications skills development and was Director of Publications Policy until August 2013.Thereafter he became Therapy Area Publications Director for the CNS, GI and Infection franchise. John has been a member of the Medical Publishing Insights & Practices (MPIP) Initiative Steering Committee Secretary on the ISMPP Board of Trustees. He is currently a member of the CMPP Board of Trustees. John has set up Solanum Medical Communications Ltd which is based at the BioHub at Alderley Park in Macclesfield, UK. Solanum provides consultancy to the pharmaceutical, biotech and device industries on medical publications policy, strategy, planning, guidelines and ethics.

Bio: Trish Groves (MBBS, MRCPsych) has worked at BMJ since 1989. She is now director of academic outreach, BMJ; honorary deputy editor, The BMJ; and editor-in-chief of BMJ Open. Through various initiatives Trish aims to champion science that is open and transparent and reduces research waste. She spends about a quarter of her time travelling and speaking, directly supporting health researchers through outreach, and focusing on capability building - particularly in relation to the BMJ Research to Publication ( eLearning programme. She has published widely, particularly as a coauthor of research reporting guidelines such as the CONSORT 2010 statement on clinical trials

Bio: Susan Hasmall is a freelance medical writer and communications specialist with a strong scientific background and 15 years' experience in medical communications. Susan has a degree in Biological Sciences and after a year of post-graduate research was awarded an MSc for her thesis. She became a research scientist at Zeneca (formerly ICI), where her research interests included cancer biology, cell signalling, hepatic biochemistry and endocrine function. Susan has authored many research articles and meeting abstracts. Robert Kiley

Bio: Robert Kiley is Head of Open Research at the Wellcome Trust where he is responsible for developing and implementing an open research strategy. The overarching aim is to help ensure that researchers are equipped, empowered and motivated to make research outputs findable, accessible and usable and to use these outputs to accelerate research and improve health. Over the past decade Robert has played a leading role in the implementation of Wellcome's open access policy and overseeing the development of the Europe PubMed Central repository. Robert also acts as the point of contact for eLife, the open-access research journal, launched in 2012 with the support of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society and the Wellcome Trust, and more recently championed the work to create a new open publishing platform for Wellcome researchers - Wellcome Open Research. Robert is a qualified librarian and an Associate Member of CILIP. Robert also sits as a Director on the ORCID Board.

Bio: After his Biochemistry degree at the University of Surrey, Paul conducted his Doctoral research into the physiological roles of nitric oxide at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. After serving on the faculty at Weill, Paul worked as a freelance consultant specializing in start-up grants for biotechnology companies, before transitioning full-time to medical publications. He has been a publications professional for over 9 years and has worked on programs spanning all stages of drug development in a variety of therapeutic areas. Paul currently guides Digital and Social Media strategy at Envision Pharma Group. The shift from traditional print journals to digital and web-based publications has been an area of interest since Paul authored a review in one of the first interactive, online journals (Science:STKE) in 2001 and was fascinated by the opportunities it provided for the simple communication of complicated concepts. Much has changed since 2001, with journals and congresses now offering a plethora of enhancements and the pervasive influence of social media on information dissemination. These additions not only change the way in which medical information is consumed, but also the methods we use to assess the impact of a publication.

Bio: Jackie Marchington joined Caudex Medical in 1990 as a medical editor/writer following a period of post-doctoral research.
