Mohammad Al-Ubaydli

Bio: Mohammad is founder and CEO of Patients Know Best. He trained as a physician at the University of Cambridge; worked as a staff scientist at the National Institutes of Health; and was a management consultant to US hospitals at The Advisory Board Company. Mohammad is the author of seven books, including Personal health records: A guide for clinicians and Streamlining Hospital-Patient Communication: Developing High Impact Patient Portals. He is also an honorary senior research associate at UCL medical school for his research on patient-controlled medical records. In 2012 he was elected an Ashoka Fellow as a social entrepreneur for the contributions he has made to patient care.

Bio: Adrian Aldcroft is the Editor of BMJ Open, an open access general medical journal that promotes transparency in the publication process by publishing reviewer reports and previous versions of the manuscript alongside the published article. Adrian has also worked as a staff editor on PLOS ONE and as a Senior Executive Editor on the BMC Series. Prior to working in publishing, Adrian spent several years at The University of Western Ontario conducting research using fMRI to map the functional areas of the visual cortex.

Prior to joining Medtronic, he spent almost 5 years as a clinical research manager at Biomatech, a consulting and testing company focused on medical devices. In addition, Patrice is an expert in numerous standards including ISO 14155, EUCOMED, and is a member of several task forces.

Theodora Bloom

Bio: Theodora Bloom is executive editor of The BMJ, where her responsibilities include operations in print and online, as well as budgetary, ethical and policy matters. She has worked in biomedical publishing since 1992, initially as an editor on the biology team at Nature, and then on the founding team of Current Biology. After a number of years helping to develop Current Biology and its siblings Structure and Chemistry & Biology, Theo joined the beginnings of the open access movement. As the founding editor of Genome Biology she was closely involved in the birth of the commercial open access publisher BioMed Central, where she remained for several years, ultimately as Editorial Director for Biology. After a spell as a freelance publishing consultant working with a variety of clients, including a medical communications agency, she joined the non-profit open access publisher Public Library of Science (PLOS) in 2008, first as chief editor of PLOS Biology and later as Biology Editorial Director with additional responsibility for PLOS Computational Biology and PLOS Genetics. She also took the lead for PLOS on issues around data access and availability. She chairs the scientific advisory board for EMBL-EBI Literature Services (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/services/literature). Until recently she served on the boards of NAM Publications (www.aidsmap.com) and the Dryad digital repository (www.datadryad.org), and on the Genome Canada Data Sharing Policies Advisory Committee. Theo has a bachelor┬┐s degree in Natural Sciences and a PhD in developmental cell biology from the University of Cambridge and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School, researching cell-cycle regulation, before moving into publishing.

Antonio Ciaglia

Bio: Dr. Antonio Ciaglia is Policy Manager at the International Alliance of Patients' Organizations (IAPO) where he leads policy development and research activities. Antonio holds a PhD in Political Science and has worked as a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and the University of Portsmouth. He specialises in policy research, health policy, patient information, and the role of civil society actors in policy making. Antonio represents IAPO in international, multi-stakeholder fora within which he collaborates with other patients' organizations, the WHO, regulators, HTA bodies and industry. In IMI-funded research projects, such as IMI-GetReal and IMI-PREFER, Antonio carries out primary and secondary research activities aimed at collecting and providing evidence-based patient perspectives around various aspects related to healthcare decision-making. Antonio's work has appeared on various academic journals with a focus on policy and political science.

Juli Clark

Juli is currently serving as Chair of ISMPP Board of Trustees (BOT), and will be assuming the role of Past President at the end of the 14th Annual Meeting. She has been an active ISMPP and BOT member, has served as participant/presenter in the Medical Publishing Insights and Practices Initiative (MPIP) as well as with ISMPP, AMWA and DIA professional society meetings.

Sophie Cook

Bio: Sophie is a general practitioner who joined The BMJ in 2009 as editorial registrar. She initially worked on research before becoming an assistant editor on the education team for 6 years, running the clinical reviews section and later acting as joint head of education for The BMJ. In January 2017 she became UK research editor, working with the international research team to handle the 4000 research submissions we receive annually and undertaking outreach visits in the UK. She is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners and holds a diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Her clinical and editorial interests include women and children┬┐s health, palliative care in the community, shared decision making in practice, conflicts of interest in publishing , co-producing content with patients and quality improvement.

Beatrix Dorr

Bio: Beatrix originally trained as a veterinarian. She subsequently moved into clinical research where she held increasingly senior positions at leading institutions across Europe. Her focus was on the successful development of transcatheter heart valves. A love of medical writing, training and an interest in medical devices led Beatrix in 2011 to start her own consultancy. She can successfully navigate the new regulatory guidelines and offers real expertise across some of the more complex device areas. Since 2015, she is a member of EMWA's executive committee and recently became a member of the Medical Device Special Interest Group. In 2011 Beatrix established her own company, CORIUVAR consulting, which focuses on clinical research consulting and medical writing for medical devices. More recently, Beatrix was elected as an executive committee member of EMWA and took up the role of public relations officer. Among her many responsibilities, Beatrix and her team look after social media, promotion and advertisement, cross-functional relationships and the Internship Forum for new writers.

Julie has worked at Novartis for more than 21 years, holding several clinical research and field medical roles in the UK affiliate, in addition to gaining extensive experience in medical affairs and scientific communication at the Swiss headquarters. Prior to joining Novartis, Julie worked for 10 years as a biomedical scientist in the UK National Health Service and in academic research at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, publishing multiple times in the field of liver histopathology. John has been a member of the Medical Publishing Insights & Practices (MPIP) Initiative Steering Committee Secretary on the ISMPP Board of Trustees. He is currently a member of the CMPP Board of Trustees. John has set up Solanum Medical Communications Ltd which is based at the BioHub at Alderley Park in Macclesfield, UK. Bio: Trish Groves (MBBS, MRCPsych) has worked at BMJ since 1989. She is now director of academic outreach, BMJ; honorary deputy editor, The BMJ; and editor-in-chief of BMJ Open. Susan Hasmall

Bio: Susan Hasmall is a freelance medical writer and communications specialist with a strong scientific background and 15 years' experience in medical communications. Susan has a degree in Biological Sciences and after a year of post-graduate research was awarded an MSc for her thesis. She became a research scientist at Zeneca (formerly ICI), where her research interests included cancer biology, cell signalling, hepatic biochemistry and endocrine function. Susan has authored many research articles and meeting abstracts. Susan took her first step toward becoming a medical communications professional in 2001, when she joined Gardiner-Caldwell Communications as a medical writer. She developed within the Gardiner-Caldwell Communications and GeoMed agencies to become VP, Medical and Scientific Services at GeoMed. A position she held for five years. Susan held similar positions at other agencies in the KnowledgePoint360 group (now Ashfield Healthcare) prior to commencing her current freelance role.
