Bio: Jan Seal-Roberts is a medical publisher with more than 20 years' experience, and has worked with several global companies including Blackwell Science (now part of Wiley), Wolters Kluwer and Springer Nature. Jan is currently Publishing Director for Adis (part of Springer Healthcare) which publishes 33 journals exclusively in the area of drugs and disease management.

Bio: Gavin Sharrock, Senior Director, Operations and Business Development, Corporate Solutions, Wiley Gavin started his career at Wiley (formerly Blackwell Publishing) as a Production Editor in Content Management, before moving on to become a Journal Publishing Manager and then a Publisher in Editorial, and then moving into business development in a Business Innovations group. Gavin has worked at Wiley for over 20 years and has considerable experience in working with medical societies and corporate clients, particularly in the Pharma and medical device industries. He currently works in the Corporate Solutions team and is responsible for working with societies and industry to generate more revenue from industry, principally although not exclusively through their publications. This includes looking at new content-driven products and services for corporate clients, as well as making sure that the partnerships that we facilitate between industry and societies promote and strengthen the brand of the journal and society and provide value to the end users.

Chris Skedgel

Senior Consultant

Bio: Chris has over 20 years of applied health economics experience in academia and, more recently, with IQVIA, a large multinational consultancy. He is interested in the use of health economics in maximising the societal value of limited healthcare resources. This includes evaluating value-for-money in terms of cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained, as well as broader concepts based on patient and public values derived using stated preference methods. He has more than 50 peer-reviewed publications on topics including cost-effectiveness evaluations, preference studies, methodological contributions and invited editorials. He sits on the editorial board of Pharmacoeconomics and maintains a link to academia as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of East Anglia. He has been a Lead Economic Reviewer for the pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review (pCODR) and the Canadian Common Drug Review (CDR). Chris has a PhD in Health Economics & Decision Science from The University of Sheffield and a masters degree in Development Economics from Dalhousie University, Canada.

Stuart Spencer

Bio: For the past 20 years Stuart has led the Lancet's Fast Track team that aims to select, review and publish prestigious manuscripts within 4 weeks of receipt. Although dealing with all areas of research, he deals with most of the cardiology submissions. Stuart started his research at the Brompton Hospital, London, looking at scoliosis in children before moving to the Veterinary School site at Bristol University. Later he set up a research team for a major pharmaceutical company in Switzerland for a year, and then spent 9 years as a senior researcher in New Zealand. He has also worked in the Netherlands, had two senior research fellowships at Leuven University, Belgium, and visiting professorships at Kings College, London and Hong Kong University, and a doctorate of medicine from Umea University, Sweden. Stuarts research expertise includes such diverse topics as, growth, neuroendocrinology, immunology and fetal development. He also had a Senior Fellowship in bioethics for 5 years. Stuart is also a Trustee of the Scoliosis Association (UK), board member of British Scoliosis Research Fund and the Steering Committee of the Swedish National GP Research School.

Simon Stones

Patient Advocate and Consultant

Bio: Simon Stones is an award-winning patient leader, advocate, speaker and consultant, who was the winner of the international WEGO Health Award for Patient Healthcare Collaborator in 2017. Simon was diagnosed with arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and fibromyalgia during his childhood, and also supports his parents who have a significant amount of chronic health conditions. Together, these experiences have stimulated Simon's interest in healthcare, driving him to improve the health and wellbeing of people with chronic health conditions. He is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of Leeds, where he is developing a framework to improve the supported self-management of arthritis by children and their families. Simon is also an active patient research partner on various national and international research projects and initiatives, and is a board member of four associations: the European Network of Arthritis in Children (ENCA), the European Network of Fibromyalgia Associations (ENFA), Fibromyalgia Action UK and RAiISE Invisible illnesses in schools and education.

David Sweeney

Bio: After gaining First Class Honours in Statistics at the University of Aberdeen, David worked at two BBSRC research institutes, as a consultant statistician before developing mathematical models of plant growth. His work on the computational aspects of this led into broader applications of IT in education and research, and he was Director of Information Services at Royal Holloway, University of London, before moving into university leadership as Vice-Principal (Communications, Enterprise and Research) in 2004. In this role he was responsible for research strategy and for developing Royal Holloway's research-led commercial and consultancy activities. He joined HEFCE in 2008 as Director (Research, Innovation and Skills) and led the development and implementation of the first Research Excellence Framework including the new impact agenda element. He was responsible for research policy and funding, knowledge exchange and university/business relations. In May 2017 he was appointed the first Executive Chair of Research England, a new council established as part of UK Research and Innovation, alongside the seven disciplinary Research Councils and the UK Innovation Agency. Research England is biggest research funder in the UK with responsibility for university block-grant funding for research and knowledge exchange. In UKRI he has particular responsibilities for Place (Regional Funding), Commercialisation and Open Science David has been invited to visit many countries to advise on research assessment and funding, particularly with respect to research impact. He is also co-chair of the Implementation Task Force for Plan S, the international initiative on full and immediate open access to research publications. David was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Aberdeen in 2012, was Vice-Chancellors Fellow at the University of Newcastle, NSW in 2015 and is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.
