Standards & Guidelines Platform

This Platform establishes the protocol for standards and best practices for medical publication professionals, documents the processes, and establishes the basis for communicating this information to the ISMPP membership.

Included are the Ethics & Standards, Global Transparency & Trends, and GPP3 Website committees.


Ethics & Standards Committee

This Committee endeavors to discover, document, and promote ethics and best practices in medical publications and publication planning to establish appropriate standards within the profession. Committee members will develop programs to ensure that the membership understands ethical standards as presented in the ISMPP Code of Ethics and how to best incorporate them into their professional practices. The Committee also promotes standards and best practices through the development of educational content, member resources, and innovative methods, approaches, and solutions to common challenges to enhance the professional practices of ISMPP members.

Proposed Remits for 2017-2018:

  • Review and update the Code of Ethics as needed

  • Provide guidance of practical application (eg, case studies) of the Code of Ethics for members and from different perspectives (eg, medical devices, small pharma, agency, and CIAs, etc)

  • Develop articles on ethics in medical writing for journal publication

  • Assist in informing ISMPP educational content initiatives (eg, Annual and European Meetings, ISMPP Us, etc.) by reviewing any archived educational content to ensure it is still relevant and/or provide guidance on any updates required

  • Continue development of resources for the Member Toolbox

  • Develop a generic presentation module on ethics, best practices, GPP, getting research published, etc

  • Complete the relaunch of the ISMPP Glossary

  • Continue to launch and maintain the ISMPP Standards Handbook modules (available to view in the ISMPP Member Center)

  • Develop other "how-to" documents, practical tools, and checklists

  • Communication of Committee activities to society and other Committees via minutes/summary to be uploaded to the Committee Center

Global Transparency & Trends Committee

Formerly the Sunshine Act Taskforce, the ISMPP Global Transparency & Trends will retain the Task Force focus on understanding laws, regulations, and/or guidance related to the recording and disclosure of financial disbursements to health care providers secondary to their participation in the development of peer review publications. As an evolution from the Task Force, however, the committee will engage in a broader remit to incrementally examine global laws, regulations, and guidance related to spend transparency.  In this manner, the committee will have a primary focus on providing education and guidance to ensure compliance and knowledge of industry best practices. membership at the global level.

Proposed Remits for 2017-2018:

  • Develop a summary (text and tables) of global reporting requirements for healthcare professionals

  • Provide similar summaries of individual country laws and professional organization policies

  • Include publication support and/or transfer of value (TOV) relevant language in global and country-specific summaries

  • Develop a 'Frequently Asked Questions' document

  • Develop a 2017 Annual Meeting presentation

  • Revise relevant content for the ISMPP website

  • Communication of Committee activities to society and other Committees via minutes/summary to be uploaded to the Committee Center

GPP3 Website Committee

The GPP3 Website Committee, working closely with the GPP3 Steering Committee (SC) liaisons, will have key responsibility for developing a ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ (FAQ) document, in response to questions that are received about GPP3.  The committee is expected to be very knowledgeable about the guidelines and to help provide training on them as opportunities arrive. The goal is to leverage the global locations and reach of both GPP3 SC and Website Committee members to continue to improve publication practices for industry and academics, as those opportunities arise. The Committee will draft responses to questions received, which will be reviewed and approved by the GPP3 SC. The Committee may also develop other materials, or suggest material for the website.

Proposed Remits for 2016-2017 (to be revised by GPP Steering Committee):

  • Ongoing development of answers to questions submitted to the GPP3 mailbox in collaboration with GPP3 SC; work with ISMPP staff to update website FAQ section as needed

  • Adapt GPP3 checklist to be disseminated publicly

  • Work with ISMPP staff to keep GPP3 website up-to-date 

  • Develop/suggest materials for website

  • Communication of Committee activities to society and other Committees via minutes/summary to be uploaded to the Committee Center

This committee is not included in the Annual Volunteer Drive.
