Position: Associate Director Medical Publications
Company: Bioverativ, a Sanofi company

This position oversees the development and execution of strategic publication plans for therapeutic areas (TAs) of interest to Bioverativ. This person is responsible for all aspects of publication development and is accountable for meeting publication development timelines/deadlines, including hands-on project management and in-depth scientific knowledge, for a portion of the plan(s).

As part of responsibilities for publications development, this person will ensure compliance with the Bioverativ publications policy, standard operating procedures, and with external guidelines on good publication practices. They will participate in cross-functional team meetings within Global Medical and other key functions within Bioverativ to ensure alignment of publications with the overall Medical strategy and communication objectives. Additionally, they will maintain good relationships and collaborations for publication-related activities with external partners. This position will report to the Executive Director, Medical Publications.

Main responsibilities of this role include:
  1. Oversee the development of the strategic publication plans

    1. Ensure that publication plans and priorities are aligned with overall Medical strategy, congress plan and communication objectives

    2. Oversee and drive the execution of publications

    3. Liaise with key functions in Bioverativ, external collaborators, and external medical communications agencies, to ensure alignment regarding content development

  2. Ensure development of publications complies with the internal and/or external policies and SOPs

  3. Manage publication budget

  4. Provide regular updates on publication activities

  5. Coordinate with Medical Communications and Medical Information to ensure bibliographies are updated and maintained

  6. Report publication metrics on key objectives to Executive Director, Medical Publications


  1. PharmD or PhD in a biological science or related field or MD, and 6+ years of related experience at pharmaceutical company or medical communications agency 

  2. Successful track record of implementation of global publication programs 

  3. Knowledge and understanding of the pharmaceutical commercialization process

  4. Development of global medical plans and global medical communication and publication strategy

  5. Management of consultants, relationship with collaborators, and vendors

  6. Excellent verbal & written communication skills

Position: Associate Director, Sr. Project Manager – Scientific Publications (Virtual)

The Associate Director, Strategic Scientific Communications will oversee projects from initiation to completion by coordinating and tracking project plans, resources, and timelines. The individual will develop project timelines, prepare and lead documentation of client and team meetings, and update ProWork Flow to ensure timely and cost-effective achievement of project milestones. The individual plays a critical role in managing client satisfaction and relationships, planning and implementing processes, mentoring the scientific communications team and monitoring the quality of content, and other aspects of project leadership. In addition, this role is responsible to support business improvement by meeting personal and departmental goals and objectives timely and effectively.


Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Oversee and assist with the development of scientific communications projects: 
    • Manage the development of projects, ensuring strategic planning and implementation among multiple internal teams while ensuring alignment with client objectives and internal processes
  • Support the internal scientific communications team: 
    • Assist with development of project strategy and directly contribute to all phases of project development to ensure that internal processes and internal teams are strategically aligned to provide timely and high-quality deliverables 
    • Assess project issues and challenges, and identify and implement solutions to meet productivity, quality and client goals as well as compliance standards
    • Review and edit content, as needed, for manuscripts, presentations, slides, and other scientific communications deliverables
  • Fostering client relationships: 
    • Build strong and strategic partnerships with client teams
    • Respond promptly to client needs and requests for service and assistance, and provide timely and clear guidance to Vaniam Group scientific communications team
  • Managing scientific communications flow: 
    • Conduct regular status meetings with client project team, internal teams, and external contractors to ensure effective communication, work quality, project flow and process, and timeline development and adherence 
    • Understand and promptly communicate client requirements to appropriate team members, and manage all requirements accordingly
    • Coordinate writing activities of internal writing team and coordinate seamless scientific support from multiple internal teams (creative, copyedit, etc.)

Note: These are the major functions and accountabilities required of the position and are the predominant criteria by which performance will be assessed. OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.



  • Minimum: Master’s degree in science, PhD, PharmD preferred 

  • A minimum of three years of work experience in an agency, the pharmaceutical industry, or a related scientific or medical writing position

Position: Publications Leader - CVMD

The primary responsibility for the Publications Leader is the development of an integrated and strategic US Publication Plan and delivery of the medical, scientific and technical publications included in this plan. The Publications Leader will often manage publication plans and activities for large, complex brands or for multiple brands within a therapy area and may serve as a skilled coach/mentor to less experienced Publications Leaders or Publications Specialists.

Typical Accountabilities:

  • Leads in the development and definition of a US publication strategy and plan that is consistent with the overall brand medical plan and ensures that the US publication strategy and plan are integrated into and linked with the global product publication strategy and plan and is recognized by the team for contributions to these strategies

  • Demonstrates project leadership and uses expertise to develop and implement creative solutions for challenging issues or manages complex publication projects, strategies, and plans (such as multiple products, multiple indications, diverse audiences, or projects requiring advanced integrative skills)

  • Exhibits leadership in the delivery of all components of the US Publication Plan to time, quality, and budget with strict adherence to AstraZeneca Publication Policy and Standards

  • Ensures that key scientific statements in publications are supported by appropriate data, maximizing the impact and credibility of communications

  • Provides leadership of cross-functional Publication Delivery Team charged with delivering the US Publication Plan

  • Leads the identification and engagement of publication authors in accordance with ICMJE criteria and works with authors to facilitate planning, development and delivery of publications projects

Essential Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree in biomedical discipline or equivalent

  • In-depth knowledge of the drug development process and human pathophysiology and diseases

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, manifested as the ability to express medical information accurately, clearly, and succinctly

  • In depth knowledge of, and experience (at least 7 yrs) in, the preparation of a wide range of publication types (eg, peer-reviewed journals, scientific meetings and congresses)

  • Demonstrated ability to manage several projects simultaneously, including dealing with risk and issue management

  • In depth knowledge of external publication guidelines and standards

  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally

  • Strong influencing and negotiating skills


  • Advanced biomedical degree or equivalent

  • In depth experience (10 yrs) in publication management

Position: Senior Manager, Publications - 1803479

Lead Publications Teams in the execution of publication plans for assigned assets, and oversee the execution of scientific publications (ie, clinical manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and oral presentations) that fulfill strategic publication plan and scientific communications objectives for the asset. Ensure Publication Plan is in alignment with the strategic publication plan as developed by the Scientific Communication Platform lead or Medical Affairs plans as applicable. In partnership with the Publications Director ensure resources and personnel are aligned and optimized to meet with needs of their therapeutic area. Provide managerial oversight to staff members, including performance assessment, training and feedback, resolution of personnel issues, and management of talent retention.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Serve as the leader of cross-functional Publications Team(s) for assigned assets, including leading team meetings/discussions and driving the execution of publication plans, incorporating input from key global stakeholders.

  • Lead tactical execution of publication plans (ie, clinical manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and oral presentations), meeting established timelines and budgets.

  • Review all publications in assigned TA to ensure quality and alignment with Scientific Communication Platforms and supporting communications

  • Partner with the Scientific Communications Director to ensure seamless transfer of the scientific publications strategic plan and oversee pull-through to publication plan and supporting tactics.

  • Partner with Publications Director to project and manage outsourcing budget and internal resource needs for assigned/assets.

  • Provide managerial oversight to internal and external medical writers regarding assigned projects, ensuring a high-quality and timely work product and adherence to Publication Policy and associated Procedures.

  • Provide direction to external vendors to effectively complete the execution of publication projects, within specified timelines, and ensure quality publication deliverables.

  • Ensure all performance assessment responsibilities are achieved for direct reports. Provide training and feedback, resolve personnel issues, and manage talent retention for assigned staff.

  • Address and resolve publications-related issues for assigned therapeutic areas and assets.

  • Ensure project information in publication records and resourcing tools is accurate and up-to-date


  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree required. PhD, PharmD, Master’s Degree preferred. Relevant professional certification/credential (eg, CMPP, AMWA) is a plus.

  • 4-5 years of medical/scientific publications (or related) experience required. Pharmaceutical industry or related (eg, medical communication agency) experience required.
