Overview
ISMPP has implemented a certification program that offers medical publication professionals an opportunity to earn the recently established Certified Medical Publication Professional (CMPP, pronounced See-Map) credential.
The CMPP credential certifies the following:
- Expertise as a medical publication professional
- Proficiency in good publication practices
- Commitment to ethical and transparent data dissemination standards
- Leadership in upholding and fostering integrity and excellence in medical publication
Once earned, the CMPP credential is valid for 5 years, at the expiration of which certificants must recertify.
Rationale for CMPP
Medical publication professionals are responsible for publishing clinical research and information that can affect medical decision-making and clinical judgement. As a formal profession, publication planning is relatively new with few defined common standards and established “best practices.”
At the same time, the profession is under significant and increasing scrutiny from a range of external stakeholders to ensure the highest levels of scientific and professional integrity. These two potentially conflicting drivers have led ISMPP to increase its leadership role in establishing professional standards and in promoting adherence to those standards through the provision of a formal, voluntary, professional certification examination to become a CMPP.
The CMPP program will allow medical publication professionals to become credentialed in this increasingly specialized practice and will help promote integrity and excellence in the profession by encouraging adherence to best-practice standards across the industry. Notably, a CMPP has been assessed via a psychometrically validated examination on all aspects of professional publication planning and has agreed to act in a positive manner to practice and promote ethical and legal standards while upholding the integrity of medical publication professionals and ISMPP as an organization.
